Entrevista a Beatlounge Radio

ENTREVISTA ONDA DANCE
Beatlounge Radio

“Take a Drink | EP” nació casi sin planearlo.

ONDA DANCE INTERVIEW
Beatlounge Radio

First of all, thank you so much for giving us the opportunity of having this interview. Wilf has been very kind again.

Tell us something about you, how you started your career (mixing, producing…)? What were your first steps in the world of the electronic dance music (EDM)?
For anyone not aware about BeatLounge, I'm Alejandra Iorgulescu, its creator and Director. Lover and follower of electronic music since 1989, when I was 12 and listened to bands such as Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Erasure, the sounds of Italo House, Acid, Hi NRG... Then in the early 90's I discovered and had a fascination for more ambient, downtempo and experimental sounds, Kraftwerk, The Grid, The Orb... which without a doubt formed me and had great influence on what I do today with BeatLounge. I always say there are tracks that are sublime and close to being a masterpiece, even today: for example, The Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds" is still for me the best ambient track of all times!
While I've been creating mixes for years I am not a DJ, my job and what I enjoy the most is definitely in production and management of artists and projects, and what best defines my beginnings in the world of electronic music and current work.
BeatLounge is also managed by my partner Luis Blanco, my Co-producer from Argentina. His first electronic sounds were those from bands like Pet Shop Boys and Italo-Disco. But many years passed until he approached music as an artist, 15 years! Today, under his alias lewait! he mixes from Chillout to Deep, Progressive and Tech-House to one of the genres that gives him the most freedom, Lounge. He also writes and co-produces tracks.

Let’s talk about Beatlounge Radio, how did this project start?
Almost by coincidence, although they say that coincidences don't exist. I had never thought about this as something which I could or would dedicate myself to professionally until March of 2005, when I was invited as General Producer for the weekly podcast a friend in Argentina had, which was broadcast by a digital radio station that no longer exists. That was my A-HA moment in which I knew that this would become so much more than a simple interest. Time passed, and years later, under the name "BeatLounge" and new Staff I founded BeatLounge Radio in March 2012, as a company where electronic music in all its genres would be the main focus. Having worked in the field of technology and design for a long time, BeatLounge was created fast and easily, and it became the perfect place where I'd merge all of my passions. In a very similar way, our label "BeatLounge Records" was born: we had an album ready and for various reasons (or destiny) the deal we had with the label that was going to release it fell through, which I immediately saw as the perfect opportunity to create our own, a label where I could have total freedom to better control every aspect of the production process of an album, from the general sound, artists, release dates, promotion, etc..

What kind of music do you mix in Beatlounge Radio? And what are the most demanded styles of music?
BeatLounge Radio's slogan or phrase is "From Chill to Trance, and Everything in Between". Definitely one of the things we had in mind since the beginning of the project, was that it would be a radio station covering all (or almost all) genres of electronic music. We have more than 30 shows on air, ranging from Deep House, Ambient, Trip Hop, Progressive, Tech, Trance, Chillout, Lounge, etc. and each one run by a different resident DJ which logically adds its share of distinction or particular sound to each program. Because of this is that we don't necessarily have styles there are most in demand, but there is I have to say a very marked difference between audiences: fans of our chillout segments are usually not the same as the more upbeat ones, and vice versa.

Tells us something about the EP ‘Take a Drink’, style of music, if it likes to your listeners…
"Take a Drink |" EP" was born almost without planning it. Jesus Alonso and lewait! had a track that we liked and that was created thinking of an EP, but they did not find a label that would release it. While looking for one, lewait! had contacted some DJ's/producers/friends to remix the track and suddenly everything took shape. BeatLounge Records was born and it was obvious that it should be the place to release it... and the rest is history.
The EP contains the original Funky Beach House tracks by Jesús Alonso and lewait!, plus four remixes by the argentineans Alex ElVil (Progressive), Vivi Pedraglio (Tech House), Mariano Sinestesia (Ambient) and the Valencian living in Ibiza, Jey Indahouse (Jackin' House).
"Take a Drink |" EP" has been very well received by our audience, and we believe it is because it has sounds for every taste!

You have just launched your own label Beatlounge Records, but we suppose there is a great competence between labels, so how do you want to be different? What will be your main contribution to EDM?
Luis:
BeatLounge Records will not focus only on EDM, that is precisely what we believe to be one of the main contributions to EDM: versatility. We have more EMD album and compilation releases planned, but also Chillout, Lounge, etc. All genres that are played daily on our radio.
Alejandra:
In addition to that mentioned by Luis, remember that BeatLounge is also a radio, which added to the label, creates a perfect symbiosis. BeatLounge Records becomes in this way a space where all kinds of artists and especially our resident DJ’s can release their work. We have also planned the release of series of albums for the most successful original radioshows, like for example "LoungeStyle Vol. 01" by the end of 2013. This versatility, as Luis mentioned, brings a difference and we believe our contribution to electronic music in general.

Let’s talk about current topics, what do you think about the health of current EDM? And in particular in the USA?
Luis:
Music is always alive, no matter the genre, there is always an audience hungry to enjoy it. In Argentina EDM has been growing strong for years, it has been mainstream and massive for at least a decade and a half. Many globally respected DJ's marvel when they play for the Argentine public simply because we enjoy music. The scene is always fluctuating, always in motion. We have traditional DJ's and thriving ones, in addition to a public that always responds very well. I think that there is EDM for a long time to come!
Alejandra:
I think that - music in general, whatever the genre - is in one of its best moments, simply because today, thanks to the Internet, social networks and new technologies, it is finally massively accessible. I am not going to talk about piracy, that is another issue. My point is that currently, who has the final word as never before is the public, and I believe that it is a much more challenging and demanding public, which in turn forces artists to be in constant evolution and refinement of their sound. It is a very positive time for music in my opinion!
In the United States in particular: I've been living in this country for a decade, and I have witnessed the impressive growth of electronic music, in a place that had never before had exposure, like the one for example seen in Europe for decades or even the one that I lived in Argentina during the 1990's.
United States is a country where if something means business, they bet big, and that is happening right now. Large corporations invest in events, artists, albums, advertising, marketing. Electronic music is in full swing, and is without a doubt the best time for everyone involved!

Please, complete the sentence: dance music for me is…
Alejandra:
Joy, fun, energy, freedom, excitement ...
Luis:
... nonstop dancing, a way of expressing myself closing my eyes and letting go.

Anything else you want tell us...
Thank you very much for the interview, and we want to invite you all to check out our releases and programming:
